Rothenburg, the archetype of a German medieval town. Spectacular old town – even with dark clouds above it. Every little side street is full of old treasures. Basically the whole town is a museum.
One of my personal highlights in the city is the Medieval Crime Museum. It shows – sometimes very drastically – how torture was a normal element of criminal investigations in Central Europe only little more than 100 years ago. The exhibits include the deadly tools of the inquisitors and the handbooks/procedures developed around their questioning of prisoners.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is south of Würzburg, directly on the motorway to Ulm.
